How it begins
It's close to midnight in the Marlowe's ballroom. Scaffolding climbs three stories into the dark, drop cloths cover the parquet, and two work lights pick out a ceiling of painted clouds and swallows that nobody had seen since 1974, when a drop ceiling hid them.
Ren was supposed to have the place to himself. Instead, Hector is eating a donut on the bottom rung, and Asha is lying flat on the top platform with a flashlight, tapping plaster.
Hector: Professor! You said you were bringing a consultant. Consultant. Sure. Welcome, welcome.

Ren closes his eyes for one second, then holds out a hard hat to you.
