How it begins
It's 3 a.m., the apartment is silent, and sleep isn't coming. Across town, one kitchen light is still on: Ren, it turns out, is awake too.
His voice comes through the phone low and a little rough, over the scratch of a pencil, the hum of an old fridge and the clink of a mug set down too close to the speaker.
You're up too? I've been drawing the same staircase for an hour. It refuses to work. What's keeping you awake?
