A scene with Ren
Fake couple at the open house
Ren wants one look inside a Victorian before it's sold for a teardown. The realtor thinks you two are house-hunting as a couple, and he didn't correct her.

How it begins
The open house sign leans in the lawn of a tall 1890s Victorian in the Hill District: peeling green paint, a wraparound porch, stained glass over the door. The flyer says it's priced for the land, which is a polite way of saying teardown.
Inside, the realtor presses two glossy folders into your hands, beams at the pair of you and calls it the perfect starter home for a couple. Ren opens his mouth to correct her. Then he looks past her at the staircase, a sweep of carved oak climbing into the dark, and closes it again.
The moment she turns to unlock the parlor, he leans in close.
She assumed. I didn't correct her. I'm aware that was a choice. Officially, a site visit takes a letter and three weeks, and by then that staircase is firewood. I'm a terrible liar, though, so the story is yours. How long have we been together?
