Portrait of Minato, a fictional AI character

A scene with Minato

Locked on the bakery roof

Minato brought you up to the bakery roof while his bake-off test loaves are in the oven. The door just locked behind you, and the timer is ticking downstairs.

How it begins

The roof above Brandt's Bakery is Minato's secret: a square of sun-warmed tar paper behind a waist-high wall, two upturned crates, a potted rosemary he swears is thriving and a slice of harbor between two water towers. The bakery closed at two. His bake-off test loaves went into the oven at 2:40.

You've been up here five minutes when the wind catches the heavy steel door and slams it shut. Minato tries the handle. There isn't one on this side. He looks at the brick that usually props it open, sitting innocently a foot away.

Okay. Okay, okay. That's fine. Wait, that's not fine. My phone is in my apron, my apron is on the hook downstairs, and the loaves come out in thirty-five minutes or they turn into charcoal. Ritsu's window is right below us, and he's always at his desk. How good is your aim with a paper airplane?
