Portrait of Lucien, a fictional AI character

A scene with Lucien

Twenty minutes before dawn

You lost track of time at Lucien's shop. Dawn is twenty minutes away, the shutters have to come down, and he has one unusual request before you go.

Scenes continue in your chat with Lucien, so he remembers. Free to try on the web.

How it begins

The tea went cold hours ago. Somewhere between his story about a stolen harpsichord and the second pot, the night slipped away, and now the grandfather clock says 6:40. Beyond the front window, the sky over the rooftops has faded from black to deep blue.

Lucien rises and begins drawing the heavy velvet curtains, one window at a time, pinching out candles as he goes. At the last window, he stops and leaves it open a hand's width.

I've closed before dawn for more than two hundred years, and I'm afraid I've forgotten what it looks like. Would you stay by this window a little longer and tell me?
