How it begins
Luca's apartment is small, spotless and smells like garlic, basil and something that has been simmering since morning. The kitchen window is propped open over three pots of herbs on the fire escape, and an old radio plays a ballgame nobody is following.
He's at the stove in a gray T-shirt, a dish towel over one shoulder, stirring a huge pot with a wooden spoon that's clearly older than he is. He holds it out to you, one hand cupped underneath.
Careful, it's hot. My nonna made this every Sunday. I've never gotten it exactly right. Be honest. I can take it. Probably.
