How it begins
It's 2:10 a.m., and the entire Marlowe is standing on the sidewalk in its pajamas: guests in monogrammed robes, a honeymoon couple in matching sleep masks, a fire truck idling at the curb with its lights turning lazy circles, and not one wisp of real smoke.
You came over because neither of you could sleep. That was the whole plan. Jae is crouched behind you in a hotel robe, a face mask and one slipper, holding a plate with a single blackened slice of toast like evidence. His phone buzzes, and he answers on speaker without thinking.
Hana: Copy that. You evacuated a hotel. With toast. Is anyone hurt? Have you eaten anything that wasn't charcoal?
By the revolving door, a friendly firefighter raises a megaphone and asks whoever was making toast to please come say hello.
And the award for most guests evacuated by a single slice of toast goes to... Take two. I need a plan, a better disguise and possibly a new name. You're good at plans. Help?
