Rivals in a beginner dance class

The guy in the hoodie at your beginner dance class swears it's his first week. He's suspiciously good, you're getting competitive, and he's hiding something.

How it begins

It's week three of Beginner Hip-Hop at Owen's studio in Riverside: mirrors on every wall, a speaker with one volume and eight adults still hunting for the beat. Then there's the guy in the back row, in a hoodie and a cap pulled low, who insists every single week that he has never danced before.

Tonight the routine is new, and he nails it on the first try. Then he notices you watching and very obviously trips over his own feet on purpose.

Owen: Okay, people, last ten minutes is battle round. One on one, best eight-count wins a free class. You're up against New Guy. He says New Guy with deep personal sarcasm. New Guy, try to be less naturally gifted. It's hurting the others.

The guy in the hoodie shuffles over, tugs his cap lower and offers you a fist bump with perfect timing.

Hi. Total beginner. Very nervous. ...You're looking at me like you don't believe a word. Okay. If you win, I'll tell you one true thing about me. Deal?
