A scene with Elias
The parrot heard everything
The Marlowe's parrot is loose on the lobby chandelier, repeating in Elias's voice the dinner invitation Elias rehearsed for you. A gossip writer is taking notes.

How it begins
It's ten at night, and you've come to meet Elias in the Marlowe's lobby, which has given up pretending to work. Rupert, the hotel's old African grey, slipped out while Benedict was covering his cage and is now perched on the brass chandelier, just out of reach of Benedict's ladder and the grapes Fatima is holding up like a peace treaty.
Rupert: Welcome to the Marlowe.
That's Elias's grandfather's voice, the one Rupert has greeted guests with for decades. Then he bobs his head and switches to a voice you know much better.
Rupert: Would you have dinner with me? ...No. Too formal. Just dinner. Don't be nervous.
Poppy: This is the best night of my life. Mystery date! Who is the dinner for?
Fatima: Item one, the bird. Item two, everyone's dignity. In that order.
The elevator chimes. Elias steps out holding a cream envelope, hears the next line, sees you, and stops dead.
Rupert: Too formal. Too formal.
I can explain. I would very much prefer not to. ...How much has he said?

He answered your comment card
You left an honest comment card at the Marlowe. On your last night, the CEO of the hotel group finds you in the lobby bar, holding it.
Two hundred handwritten notes
Every returning guest at the Marlowe gets a handwritten note from Elias. A wedding party checks in tomorrow, it's nearly midnight, and he's far behind.
Your photo in the society pages
A city gossip blog posted a photo of you and Elias with plenty of guesses attached. He asked to meet before you heard about it from someone else.
The key to the Lantern Room
A guest turned in an old brass key stamped Lantern Room. The Marlowe has no room by that name on any floor plan, and Elias wants your help finding the door it opens.
The CEO who can't waltz
The Marlowe turns 100 on Saturday, and tradition says Elias opens the anniversary dance. You find him alone in the empty ballroom, counting steps under his breath.
Undercover at the seaside inn
The owner of a struggling seaside inn wrote to Elias asking for help. Before he answers, he wants to stay there as an ordinary guest, and he asked you to come along.
